Cardstock is paper that is thicker and more durable than normal writing and printing paper, but thinner and more flexible than other forms of paperboard. Sometimes called pasteboard or cover stock, this paper is often used for business cards, postcards, playing cards, catalogue covers, scrapbooking. 

12pt card stock is a more durable, more versatile, and much thicker than ordinary printing paper or other kinds of paperboard of a similar size. Their surface usually is smooth; it may be textured, metallic, or glossy and they’re sold in sheets as opposed to paper reams. 

Measurements

In the U.S., card stock paper thickness is usually measured in points (pt.) or mils which is the thickness of the sheet in thousandths of an inch.  Pound, symbolized by the symbol #, is another term used to express weight in pounds of 500 sheets of paper with a given area. The measurements used in the case for standard card stock is 17 by 22 in (432 by 559 mm). 

For example, a 10-pt. card stock is 0.010 in (0.254 mm) thick. This corresponds to a weight of about 250 g/m2, also expressed as 50#. Similarly, a 12-pt. card stock is 0.012 in (0.3048 mm) thick and will weigh around 300 g/m2, also expressed as 110#.

Common thickness of Card stock paper in the market are 10pt, 12pt, 16pt and 24pt. 12pt cardstock is one of the most popular choices for today’s cardstock printing needs although there are other sizes, thicknesses and therefore weights of this type of material, on the market.
